Here’s an exercise worth doing — but only if you do it correctly. Go to ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini and type the kind of category-level prompt a buyer who has never heard of you would type: “What are the best platforms for [your category]?” or “Which companies are considered leaders in [your space]?” Read the answer carefully. Note every brand that appears. Note how yours is characterized, if it appears at all. Note what the AI says about your competitors.

The catch — and it’s an important one — is that you need to run this test from a genuinely cold session. If you’ve ever discussed your company in that AI session before, if you’re logged in to an account with a history of brand-related conversations, or if the AI has learned your preferences and interests over time, you may get a distorted result. Your personalized AI experience is not your buyer’s AI experience.

To get a genuinely neutral read, you need one of three approaches: open a fresh incognito browser window where you’re not logged in to any AI service; ask a colleague whose account has no connection to your brand to run the same prompts; or, best of all, ask someone entirely outside your organization — a friend, an advisor, someone who genuinely has no prior association with your company — to run the prompts and report back what they see.

What you’re testing in this exercise is not whether AI knows you exist. It almost certainly does. What you’re testing is whether a buyer who has never encountered your brand before would have it surfaced in their research — and how it’s characterized relative to the competitors who appear. That is a fundamentally different question from “does AI know about us?” and it requires a genuinely uncontaminated session to answer.

A one-time audit gives you a baseline. A quarterly cadence gives you a directional read on whether your investments in external validation are moving the needle. The queries to run regularly should cover three categories: generic category queries (“what are the best tools for [your category]”), problem-framed queries (“how do companies solve [the problem you solve]”), and competitive queries (“how does [your company] compare to [your key competitors]”).

Run these across at least three AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini are the minimum set worth checking — because the results can vary meaningfully between systems depending on their training data, their real-time retrieval sources, and the way they’ve been fine-tuned for different use cases. A brand that appears prominently in ChatGPT responses may be weaker in Perplexity, which relies heavily on real-time web retrieval and tends to surface more recent content.

Document the results systematically. Screenshot the answers. Note which competitors appear and how they’re characterized. Track changes quarter over quarter. This data becomes the most direct measure of whether your external validation investment is producing AI visibility improvement.

What Closing the Gap Looks Like

You can’t directly optimize for AI recommendations the way you’d optimize a Google page for a specific keyword. What you can do is build the kind of authoritative, third-party-validated digital presence that AI systems are specifically designed to recognize and trust. The investment required is the same investment that has always built genuine brand authority, but with a clearer understanding of why each component matters.

Earning coverage in publications your buyers read isn’t just a PR tactic. It’s a direct investment in AI recommendation visibility, because that coverage becomes permanent source material that AI draws on every time it answers a category query. Maintaining an active, well-managed presence on the review platforms that matter in your space isn’t just good for direct buyer research. It’s a continuous feed of peer-validated social proof that AI incorporates into its characterization of your brand. Publishing original research and insights that earn citations isn’t just thought leadership for its own sake. It’s the creation of authoritative, linkable assets that AI retrieval systems are specifically designed to surface.

The review platforms like Capterra and others relevant to your market are worth specific attention in this audit because they’re among the most directly AI-readable sources of structured buyer feedback. AI systems parse review platform data in a very literal sense: they read the aggregate ratings, the review volume, the specific language reviewers use to describe your product’s strengths and limitations.
